The Opportunity: Staff Backend Engineer - NIRA Location: Bangalore (Hybrid) As a Staff Backend Engineer on NIRA, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction of a critical domain within our credit platform. You'll lead a complex product area end-to-end, from strategy through execution, while working closely with our Principal Engineer, GM, and cross-functional partners across NIRA, Cashalo, and our US teams. How you'll make an impact Own a domain: Lead strategy, design, and delivery for a core part of NIRA's platform. Set technical direction: Spot strategic needs and surface risks before they become problems. Drive complex initiatives: Take large, high-stakes projects from design to ship. Champion AI-native engineering: Push adoption of tools like Claude, Cursor, and Augment across the team. Mentor engineers: Level up engineers up to Senior, and raise the technical bar in Bangalore. Lead incidents: Own SEV1 and lower incident response through to resolution. Bridge global teams: Align with Principal Engineering and peers across NIRA, Cashalo, and US teams. Influence the roadmap: Shape product direction through technical tradeoffs, not just execution. Simplify systems: Cut complexity out of designs before it compounds. Why you're a great fit 7+ years building web APIs, ideally in Java and Spring Boot Deep experience with financial systems: state machines, complex lifecycles Strong grasp of distributed systems and queue-based architectures Proven track record scaling consumer products at high transaction volume End-
