Why Kotlin for Android
Kotlin-First Android
Since 2019 Google recommends Kotlin for all new Android apps. New Android libraries (Jetpack Compose, coroutines support in Room, Retrofit, WorkManager, ViewModel) are designed for Kotlin first. Most job descriptions for Android developers in India now ask for Kotlin.
- Jetpack Compose, the modern Android UI toolkit, works only with Kotlin.
- Coroutines make network and database calls simple without callbacks.
- Null safety removes the most common cause of Android crashes.
- Less boilerplate: data classes, default arguments and extension functions replace pages of Java code.
Kotlin on the Backend Too
Kotlin is not only for Android. Backend teams use it with Spring Boot (full official support) and Ktor (a Kotlin-native web framework by JetBrains). One language for the mobile app and the server lets a team share models and skills.
