What is Spring Cloud
Spring Cloud in One Line
Spring Cloud is a family of Spring projects that solve the common problems of distributed systems: finding services, routing traffic, central configuration, resilient calls, messaging and tracing. Each piece is added to a Spring Boot app as a starter dependency plus a bit of YAML.
The Problems It Solves
| Problem in our 2-service ShopEase | Spring Cloud answer |
|---|---|
URLs like http://localhost:8081 are hard-coded; instances come and go | Service discovery (Eureka / Consul / Kubernetes) + Spring Cloud LoadBalancer |
| The React app must know 4 hosts and ports | Spring Cloud Gateway: one entry point, routing, auth, rate limits |
| Each service has its own copy of shared settings | Spring Cloud Config: central, Git-backed configuration |
| Writing RestClient code for every call is repetitive | Spring Cloud OpenFeign: declarative HTTP clients |
| A slow service drags others down | Spring Cloud Circuit Breaker with Resilience4j |
| Services need to react to events | Spring Cloud Stream (Kafka / RabbitMQ binders) |
Spring Boot vs Spring Cloud
| Spring Boot | Spring Cloud | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | One application | Many applications working together |
| Gives you | Embedded server, auto-config, starters, Actuator | Discovery, gateway, config, resilience, messaging |
| Needed for microservices? | Yes (builds each service) | Helpful, not required (Kubernetes covers some parts) |
Note: On Kubernetes, the platform already provides discovery (Services/DNS) and config (ConfigMaps). Many teams then use only Gateway, OpenFeign and Resilience4j from Spring Cloud. Choose components by need, not by habit.
