Talk to It Like a New Colleague
A good prompt reads like a clear task given to a smart new team member who knows nothing about your company. Say what to do, for whom, why, with what information, and what the output should look like.
| Vague prompt | Clear prompt |
|---|---|
| Write about our shoes. | Write a 60-word product description for ShopEase's "Stride Pro" running shoe for Indian college students. Mention: breathable mesh, 280 g weight, ₹2,499. Friendly tone, no exaggerated claims. |
| Summarize this. | Summarize this customer chat for a support agent in 3 bullets: problem, what was tried, what the customer wants. |
A Prompt Builder
Example
Building prompts from named parts makes it hard to forget a part. Empty parts are skipped:
def build_prompt(task, audience="", context="", constraints=(), output_format=""):
parts = [f"Task: {task}"]
if audience:
parts.append(f"Audience: {audience}")
if context:
parts.append(f"Context:\n{context}")
if constraints:
parts.append("Rules:\n" + "\n".join(f"- {c}" for c in constraints))
if output_format:
parts.append(f"Output format: {output_format}")
return "\n\n".join(parts)
print(build_prompt(
task="Write a product description for the Stride Pro running shoe.",
audience="Indian college students who run 3-5 km a day",
context="Breathable mesh upper, 280 g, cushioned sole, price Rs 2,499.",
constraints=["Maximum 60 words", "No claims that are not in the context"],
output_format="One paragraph, plain text",
))Output
Task: Write a product description for the Stride Pro running shoe. Audience: Indian college students who run 3-5 km a day Context: Breathable mesh upper, 280 g, cushioned sole, price Rs 2,499. Rules: - Maximum 60 words - No claims that are not in the context Output format: One paragraph, plain text
Give the Reason
Explaining why a rule exists helps the model apply it sensibly. "Keep it under 60 words because it is shown on a mobile product card" works better than "under 60 words" alone. Context about the situation is the most underused part of most prompts.
