Senior Product Designer, Consumer
Discord · San Francisco Bay Area
Experience: 5+ years of experience
Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games.
Our mission on the Consumer team is to improve both the quality and depth of Discord’s core product value - which is to make Discord the best place to hang out online and play games with friends. Millions of people use Discord every day to find belonging, create connections, and talk… and we are the center of this.
The work focuses on improving and simplifying the foundations of the Discord experience at large. This could be streamlining how users customize their settings, to the way they express themselves over text, voice, and video. You’ll be part of a multi-faceted team flexing across surface area ownership, and acting as a guardian on our core foundations.
As a product designer, you'll be involved with the full end-to-end product development process, from brainstorming to launch. You'll use a balance of strategic thinking, product principles, systems design, and strong visual design skills to iterate and innovate on the Discord product. If you're interested in joining a passionate team of designers that are designing features that will be used by millions of people across the world, come join us.
This position will be located in the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma Counties), or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area.
What You'll Be Doing
• You will be a design lead without a cross-functional product team, partnering with engineers, product managers and other cross-functional peers to oversee the user experience from idea to market.
• You will form part of our growing and “EPAD” Organization that includes Engineering, Product, Analytics and Design functions.
• You will create wire-frames, beautiful mockups, amazing prototypes, and help implement your designs to pixel perfection. You will be considered the quality leader within your team, checking all of your work as it it built and ensuring it reflects your vision perfectly.
• You will manage your own timelines/deliverables and exercise solid judgment in your own priorities.
• You’ll be considered a leader within your immediate team, actively influencing the strategy and scope of your work.
• You will be collaborating with designers across organizations in sprints to ensure scalable and consistent user experiences (that isn’t shipping an org chart).
• You will proactively present and communicate your designs to organizational leadership, your immediate team and your design peers to garner feedback and build consensus around your concepts. You’ll also routinely share work with the design discipline and executive leadership - acting as the domain expert over your product area.
• You will test, learn, and iterate on everything you do alongside product peers.
• You will meaningfully use, maintain and routinely contribute components towards our Design System library.
What you should have
• 5+ years of experience designing modern consumer-focused products, and have been the design lead of multiple product teams.
• Highly proficient using Figma and some high-fidelity prototyping tool (ex: Protopie, Framer, Origami, etc). You have a high level of skill at crafting high quality visual designs and have an eye for creating delight in every product experience.
• A working understanding and curiosity of AI-assisted design workflows — from ideation and prototyping to generative UI — and the design judgment to know when AI output needs a human hand before it ships.
• A portfolio of work on which you were the primary designer contributing to projects for at least both desktop and mobile.
• Frequent personal use of Discord, with preference towards those with direct use of the gaming space/experience.
• You proactively form ideas and can communicate them with others through varying formats (documents, prototypes, presentations).
• You collaboratively guide the vision for the product and achieve it through design explorations, documentation, and presentations.
• Ownership mindset with a bias towards action, helping to drive projects and decisions forward. Maintains low ego with a focus on progress and growth.
• You have experience working with a design system/library.
