AWS Inspector

Amazon Inspector is an automated, continuous vulnerability management service that scans AWS compute workloads for software vulnerabilities and unintended network exposure.

Unlike traditional security tools that require you to manually schedule resource-heavy scans every week or month, Inspector operates continuously in near-real time. It dynamically discovers eligible resources as they deploy and monitors them throughout their lifecycle.

1. Targeted Workload Layers

Amazon Inspector focuses specifically on the compute and deployment layers of your architecture:

Amazon EC2 Scanning

Inspector scans virtual machines for known Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) in operating system packages and programming language libraries. It operates in two modes:

  • Agent-Based (SSM): Integrates natively with the AWS Systems Manager (SSM) Agent to read the server's local package inventory. It uses an event-driven model, meaning it triggers a localized re-scan the moment you install a new package or patch software.

  • Agentless Mode (Hybrid): If a machine lacks an active SSM agent or runs an unconfigured OS, Inspector automatically defaults to agentless scanning. It takes a transient, out-of-band snapshot of the underlying Amazon EBS storage volume, securely extracts the configuration and package files, and evaluates them without impacting the CPU performance of your live application server.

Amazon ECR Container Image Scanning

When integrated with Amazon Elastic Container Registry (ECR), Inspector upgrades standard image scanning to Enhanced Scanning. It analyzes both container operating system packages and core language dependencies (such as Node.js, Python, or Java applications). It continuously tracks images pushed within the last 30 days or pulled within the last 90 days, flagging them immediately if a brand-new zero-day vulnerability is announced.

AWS Lambda Function Scanning

  • Standard Lambda Scanning: Scans the core application dependencies package definitions packaged inside your serverless ZIP files or container layers for known vulnerabilities.

  • Lambda Code Scanning: Uses automated reasoning and machine learning to analyze your custom proprietary code blocks. It runs Static Application Security Testing (SAST) to surface code-level flaws like SQL injection vulnerabilities, data leaks, or unencrypted credential strings.

2. Advanced Architectural Features

The Contextual Risk Score

Traditional vulnerability tools assign a generic National Vulnerability Database base score (CVSS) to a flaw. Inspector replaces this with a highly contextualized Amazon Inspector Risk Score.

If a severe remote code execution vulnerability is discovered in an application library, but the underlying EC2 instance has zero open routes to the public internet and sits inside an completely isolated private subnet, Inspector will dynamically lower the severity score. This context-based calculation prevents alerting fatigue, allowing your engineering team to prioritize fixes based on real, actual risk.

Enterprise Organization Integration

Using AWS Organizations, you can designate a single security environment as the Delegated Administrator account for Amazon Inspector. With a single action, you can activate continuous scanning globally across hundreds of distinct child accounts, automatically enroll future member environments the moment they are provisioned, and aggregate all organization-wide findings into a central dashboard.

Automated Remediation Workflows

Inspector doesn't just log data in isolation; it functions as a security signal transmitter:

  • AWS Security Hub: It forwards prioritized findings directly to Security Hub to centralize compliance postures.

  • Amazon EventBridge: Every discovered vulnerability emits a structured JSON state-change event. You can wire these events directly into automated pipelines—such as triggering an AWS Systems Manager Automation document to auto-patch an EC2 group, or sending a critical alert payload straight to your engineering team's Slack channels.

  • Automated Closure: The moment you resolve a flaw or roll out an updated container layer, Inspector automatically detects the patch, marks the tracking ticket as resolved, and changes its status to Closed.
