AWS Shield
AWS Shield is a managed Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection service that safeguards applications running on AWS.
AWS Shield operates at two distinct capability tiers: Standard and Advanced.
1. AWS Shield Standard
AWS Shield Standard provides automatic, baseline defensive scaffolding for every AWS customer at no additional charge.
Always-On Infrastructure Inspection: The service is enabled by default across all incoming traffic paths.
It continuously monitors network flows in real time to intercept threats at the network and transport layers (Layer 3 and Layer 4 of the OSI model). Mitigation Vectors: It uses deterministic packet filtering and priority-based traffic shaping to scrub out common structural attacks, such as SYN floods, UDP reflection floods, and packet fragments.
Static Operational Thresholds: Shield Standard evaluates incoming packets against static, pre-configured traffic thresholds engineered around the generic handling capacities of individual AWS services (like Amazon Route 53 or Amazon CloudFront).
It does not adapt to your specific application's normal traffic patterns.
2. AWS Shield Advanced
AWS Shield Advanced is a premium subscription tier tailored for enterprise workloads and systems requiring comprehensive visibility and specialized human support.
Layer 7 Protection: While Standard stops at Layer 4, Shield Advanced extends automated protection directly into the application layer (Layer 7).
It analyzes individual HTTP/HTTPS request structures to isolate and mitigate complex anomalies like HTTP floods, low-and-slow attacks, and DNS query floods. Dynamic Traffic Baselining: Instead of using rigid, static limits, Shield Advanced constantly monitors your production traffic over time. It creates a customized profile of what your application's normal volume looks like, allowing it to accurately spot and suppress micro-anomalies that would slide right past generic filters.
Health-Based Detection Integration: You can link Route 53 health checks directly into your Shield Advanced detection profile.
If your application servers begin dropping requests or lagging, Shield Advanced instantly drops its attack-detection thresholds, triggering automated mitigations much faster to minimize user-facing downtime.
3. Specialized Features of Shield Advanced
The Shield Response Team (SRT)
Subscribing to Shield Advanced gives your team direct 24/7 access to the Shield Response Team (SRT).
Financial Cost Protection
DDoS attacks typically attempt to drive up infrastructure bills by forcing its underlying compute clusters to scale aggressively to handle artificial load.
Bundled Security Tools
A subscription to Shield Advanced natively includes full access to AWS WAF (Web Application Firewall) and AWS Firewall Manager at no extra cost for the protected resources. It handles the deployment of automatic web access control lists (Web ACLs) to instantly drop malicious application requests before they reach your backend APIs.
