Manual vs Automation Testing
Two Ways to Test
In manual testing a person opens the app, follows the steps of a test case and compares the result by eye. In automation testing a program (a test script) does the same steps and checks the result by code.
| Point | Manual testing | Automation testing |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | a human tester | a script (Selenium, TestNG ...) |
| Speed | slow, minutes per test | fast, seconds per test, can run at night |
| Repeat 100 times | boring, errors creep in | same result every time |
| Best for | exploratory, usability, new features that change daily | regression, smoke, data-heavy, cross-browser checks |
| Upfront cost | low | higher (writing and maintaining scripts) |
| Skills | domain knowledge, test design | test design + programming (Java) + tools |
What to Automate
- Automate: login, search, add to cart, checkout flows that run in every release; tests with many data sets; checks on many browsers.
- Do not automate: a one-time test, a screen whose design changes every week, "does this look nice?" checks, CAPTCHA, OTP from a real phone.
Tip: Automation does not replace manual testers. It frees them from repeating the same 300 regression steps so they can explore new features.
